A terminal is used to secure the end of a steel wire so that the wire can only move in one direction. It can, for example, be used functionally; to tension a structure, or architecturally; for display purposes. In addition, they can be used to secure a mast in so-called shrouds, to stabilize the mast, and thus the boat.

Terminals are swaged onto the steel wire, meaning that a tool is used to compress the terminal around the steel wire to secure it to an anchor point.
