According to COLREG 72, all masthead lights must be mounted higher than sidelights. This makes it easier for other boats to calculate their position in relation to your position and heading. In addition, a lower-mounted light can be hidden by other objects or people. This type of masthead light can be used on sailboats under 20 m (tri-colour) or on motorboats under 12 m (white) instead of small all-round lights.
