In accordance with COLREG 72, all mast lanterns must be positioned higher than the sidelights. This makes it easier for other boats to calculate their position relative to your position and heading. In addition, a lantern placed lower down may be hidden by other objects or people. This type of mast lantern can be used on sailboats under 20 m (three-color) or on motorboats under 12 m (white) instead of small all-round lanterns.
