According to COLREG 72, all mast lights must be placed higher than side lights. This makes it easier for other boats to calculate their position relative to your position and heading. In addition, a lower-mounted light may be hidden by other objects or people. This type of mast light can be used on sailboats under 20 m (three-colour) or on motorboats under 12 m (white) instead of small all-round lights.
