According to COLREG 72, all masthead lanterns must be mounted higher than the side lights. This makes it easier for other boats to determine their position relative to your position and heading. In addition, a lantern mounted lower may be hidden by other objects or people. This type of mast lantern can be used on sailboats under 20 m (3-color) or on motorboats under 12 m (white) instead of small all-round lanterns.
