In accordance with COLREG 72, all mast lanterns must be mounted higher than side lights. This makes it easier for other boats to calculate their position relative to your position and heading. In addition, a lower-mounted lantern can be hidden by other objects or people. This type of mast lantern can be used on sailboats under 20 m (three-color) or on motorboats under 12 m (white) instead of small all-round lanterns.
