Aluminum anodes can replace traditional zinc anodes. Aluminum anodes have some advantages over traditional zinc anodes. The alloy the aluminum anode is made from has a greater negative charge than zinc, as well as a longer service life, which means the anode is more active over a longer period.
In total, an aluminum anode produces about 70% more Amp/Hours over its lifetime than an equivalent traditional zinc anode. As a side benefit, you cut the weight in half and save a little on the price.
NB: There must be no physical connection between aluminum and zinc anodes, as the aluminum anode will protect the zinc anode. Therefore, all anodes on, for example, drives and outboard motors must be either aluminum or zinc. Aluminum can be used in both saltwater and brackish water.
Many manufacturers now use aluminum anodes as standard on their new engines and boats, for example Mercruiser, Mercury, Yanmar, Selva, Torqeedo, Princess and Sunseeker.
6 GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE ALUMINUM ANODES::
- CADMIUM FREE: Free from cadmium, a heavy metal harmful to the environment.
- LASTS LONGER: 10% longer service life than a zinc anode.
- BETTER PROTECTION: Provides better protection than a zinc anode
- FOR SALTWATER & BRACKISH WATER: Used in both saltwater and brackish water (zinc anodes are for saltwater only).
- LIGHTER: 2.5 times lighter than zinc anodes
- ALUMINUM BOATS: Ideal for protecting boats with aluminum hulls
